Elliott Yamin finished third on American Idol in 2006. Among U.S. casts with broad coverage here, season 5 had the most later gold, chart or Grammy careers. “Best” depends on the lens: season 5 leads cast depth and early exits with later success, while season 4 leads all three top-three career totals.
1
The cast around Elliott Yamin
A milestone means a Gold or higher RIAA record, a Hot 100 entry, or an entry on a U.S. Billboard country chart released on or after that season’s finale. A Grammy nomination following the finale also counts. A singer with several milestones occupies one cast slot.
Season 5’s eight include Yamin, Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee. Chris Daughtry, Kellie Pickler and Bucky Covington join them. Mandisa and Ace Young complete the eight, with Young’s milestone a songwriting Grammy nomination. Paris Bennett’s result remains open; the share uses the full cast, so an open result can raise it. Group acts count once, and members’ later solo careers stay separate.
The cast comparison requires at least 80% of finalist results settled and at least 5 years since the finale. The ≥ sign marks a minimum.
2
A field that sent future stars home early
In season 5, Mandisa, Bucky Covington and Ace Young left before the final five and later reached a milestone. Kellie Pickler did the same that season, as did Jennifer Hudson after seventh place in season 3. Chris Daughtry finished fourth in season 5, showing the cast’s depth just outside this early-exit count.
This lens describes where later careers began. It cannot establish how well someone sang in an elimination round.

The top three give season 4 another claim
Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice and Vonzell Solomon make up season 4’s top three. Together they lead the comparable seasons on certified album units, certified single units and Hot 100 entries. Each measure stays separate, and a certification can include streaming equivalents.
These lifetime career totals include charted show performances and earlier releases. Billy Gilman’s earlier albums contribute to Voice season 11. Seasons with an unresolved third place or an incomplete total stay out of these rankings.
11
The Voice and The X Factor have different limits
On The Voice, many older casts still have gaps: season 4 has four qualifying acts so far, with nine of its twelve finalist results settled. The X Factor season 2 includes Fifth Harmony, Emblem3 and Bea Miller among its qualifying acts. Fifth Harmony’s total excludes its members’ solo releases.
Chair turns give a separate view of The Voice: eight season 24 finalists turned all four chairs, measuring coaches’ audition choices among eventual finalists.
12
Leave time for a career to grow
Recent seasons appear in the table with an “Under 5 years” mark and stay out of the career rankings. The five-year cutoff gives new casts time, and a release can still reach Gold years after a finale.
Season 5 leads the three cast measures, and season 4 leads the three top-three career measures. Voice season 24 leads the four-chair finalist count. Choose the part of a season you value, then follow its singers.

Every season’s cast coverage
A settled result has a qualifying milestone, or checks for all the measures with no unresolved date or credit. Open results remain unknown. The finalist group follows each season’s roster definition.
