Carrie Underwood leads 8 to 3 on Grammys and in certified album units. Kelly Clarkson has four Daytime Emmys as a talk-show host.

Kelly Clarkson summed up the feud talk for Entertainment Tonight in 2018: “We don’t even know each other well enough to be enemies.”

At her final Las Vegas residency show, Carrie Underwood sang “Something in the Water” beneath a waterfall. Clarkson spent seven seasons of daytime TV turning other people's songs into Kellyoke.

Both keep returning to talent-show TV. Clarkson is coaching on The Voice this fall, and Underwood has announced her return to American Idol for season 25.

Round 1

The voice: who can sing it all?

Can one voice carry a singer across genres? Reviewing Meaning of Life for TIME in 2017, Raisa Bruner traced Clarkson's path from pop and rock to country-influenced soul. She heard one consistent voice from “Love So Soft” to the “tender falsettos” of “Cruel”.

In 2023, The New Yorker's Hanif Abdurraqib praised her work across genres and heard an exposed, intimate voice on “skip this part”. He thought “A Moment Like This” undersold her voice and preferred the rock identity of her late-2000s records.

For Underwood, the word is control. Reviewing My Savior for Country Universe, Michelle Ivey wrote, “Carrie’s control over her voice makes her effective throughout the album.” She praised Underwood's shifts from tender to powerful and her balance with CeCe Winans, though several familiar hymns felt routine.

Underwood experiments as well. TIME heard sing-rap phrasing on Cry Pretty's “That Song That We Used to Make Love To” and a dancehall rhythm on “End Up With You”. The review found the album's sound more interesting than its writing.

Round 2

The hits: how far do the songs travel?

How far can a pop star roam? Clarkson has reached the pop, adult contemporary and dance charts, and she has charted in country too. On the Hot 100, “Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)” hit No. 1 and “Since U Been Gone” peaked at No. 2.

Country kept pulling her in. Duets with Reba McEntire on “Because Of You”, Jason Aldean on “Don't You Wanna Stay” and Vince Gill on “Don't Rush” earned country collaboration Grammy nominations in 2008, 2012 and 2014.

Underwood crossed over as well. “Inside Your Heaven” took her to No. 1 on the Hot 100, and the country single “Before He Cheats” climbed to No. 8.

Her albums traveled too. My Gift reached the country, Christian and holiday album charts, and My Savior reached the country album chart.

Both landed new worldwide deals within a year. Atlantic announced a long-term deal with Clarkson in June 2016, and Universal Music Group announced an agreement with Underwood at Capitol Records Nashville in March 2017.

Round 3

The sales: who has more certified units?

Underwood takes this round with room to spare. Her albums carry almost twice Clarkson’s certified units, and her singles more than three times.

In reported album sales, Underwood had 14,578,000 by January 2014 and Clarkson 14,600,000 by February 2020. The two reports are six years apart.

Round 4

The awards: who owns the Grammy shelf?

Clarkson has the longer Grammy nomination list, with 17 nominations to Underwood's 16. Underwood has won 8, and Clarkson has won 3.

Underwood's run started fast. She won Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “Jesus, Take The Wheel” in 2007, and she took that vocal category again with “Before He Cheats” in 2008 and “Last Name” in 2009. In 2010 she and Randy Travis won Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for “I Told You So”.

Nashville embraced her in the same stretch. Travis surprised her with a Grand Ole Opry invitation in March 2008, and Garth Brooks inducted her in May.

Best Country Solo Performance followed for “Blown Away” in 2013 and “Something In The Water” in 2015. My Savior won Best Roots Gospel Album in 2022.

Clarkson's 3 wins all came in pop. In 2006, “Since U Been Gone” won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Breakaway won Best Pop Vocal Album. Stronger won Best Pop Vocal Album again in 2013.

Underwood’s 8 Grammy wins span 15 years. Clarkson has 3.

Round 5

The live show: two ways to fill a room

Underwood's Las Vegas stage held a throne built from reconstructed parts of a 1963 Cadillac Coupe deVille. Her residency, Reflection, also used pyrotechnics, dancers and aerialists. It closed in April 2025.

In August 2023 she opened for Guns N' Roses in Moncton. Her set covered Joan Jett, Heart and Motörhead, and she joined the band for “Sweet Child O' Mine” and “Paradise City”.

Clarkson's residency, Studio Sessions, puts her band in the spotlight. She described it as bringing the studio to the stage. Caesars billed the show around her band and longtime collaborators and advertised 2026 Colosseum dates in July and August.

Round 6

The television: who made daytime TV sing?

Clarkson made music part of The Kelly Clarkson Show through her Kellyoke cover segment. She told the Associated Press that she covers a long list of songs each season, naming Chappell Roan and Billie Eilish among the newer artists she enjoys covering.

The show ran seven seasons and ended in August 2026. Its Emmy Awards include Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host and Outstanding Daytime Talk Series.

She is also a coach on season 30 of The Voice. NBC named her alongside Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green, and she coached in the October episodes.

Underwood's TV work runs through American Idol and NBC's Sunday Night Football. Idol announced her for its 2025 judging panel with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, and she announced that all three will return with Ryan Seacrest for season 25. She was also announced for the 2026 Sunday Night Football open, her fourteenth consecutive year.

Round 7

The momentum: who has the spotlight now?

Clarkson unveiled the paired singles “mine” and “me” in April 2023, and chemistry arrived in June. The album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

Then came her newly formed High Road Records. “Where Have You Been” went out on the label in May 2025, and “I'd Be Lyin'” followed in July 2026.

Underwood's Denim & Rhinestones peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200, and a deluxe edition followed in September 2023. A duet recording of “Leave A Light On (Talk Away The Dark)” with Papa Roach was announced for August 2024, and Barefoot Country Music Festival has named her its first 2027 headliner.

From October 2025 through September 2026, Clarkson's English Wikipedia article drew 1,516,274 views and Underwood's drew 1,096,995. From July to September 2026, Clarkson's views ran 53% lower than a year earlier, and Underwood's ran 10% lower.

Round 8

The rivalry: what have they said in public?

Their joint red-carpet photo was Clarkson's idea. In 2018, she told Entertainment Tonight that she proposed it to answer claims that the two were enemies.

Underwood had already weighed in. That April, she posted that she had voted for Clarkson in a poll: “Whatever, girl, I voted for you!”

Feud talk resurfaced in 2023. On Watch What Happens Live, Clarkson rejected it again: “There’s no beef between us.” She added that they had met only a few times and welcomed Underwood's remote appearance on her talk show.

What each career does best

Carrie Underwood brings Grammy gold and spectacle. She has more Grammy wins than Clarkson and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 2008. Reflection wrapped her songs in pyrotechnics and aerialists, and Barefoot Country Music Festival has named her its first 2027 headliner.

Kelly Clarkson brings range and reach. TIME and The New Yorker praised her work across genres, and she has reached pop, country and dance charts. Her talk show won Emmy Awards, High Road Records releases her new music, and she is coaching on The Voice this fall.
