Frenchie Davis, also named Franchelle Davis, was disqualified from American Idol in 2003, then sang the Seasons of Love solo on Broadway in Rent. In 2004 she was cast as Effie in a Dreamgirls tour. In August 2007 she played Mahalia Jackson. From 2008 to May 2009 she toured in Ain't Misbehavin' with Ruben Studdard and Trenyce. That tour was nominated for a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. Her debut solo single, Love's Got A Hold On Me, peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Dance chart. In June 2017 she shared the José Esteban Muñoz Award with Nathan Lee Graham and Wilson Cruz.

In 2003 she joined the Broadway cast of Rent and sang the solo in Seasons of Love. She returned on June 1, 2005. She had announced a May 2007 exit, then announced her final performance after a mid-April 2007 show.
