Frenchie Davis made The Voice’s Top 8 in 2011, completed her Howard University degree in 2014, and by 2022 led a charter school’s theater arts program. Her years after television joined education with dance music, cabaret and stage roles. In October 2026, she was still performing for the LGBTQ community that helped her start.

Learning the craft
2003
College clubs led to Rent in 2003
At Howard University, Davis studied theater and earned extra money in Washington, D.C.’s gay clubs, including Edge and Tracks. She told the Washington Blade that tips “bought groceries and paid for books.” Her early stage work took her to Germany for Little Shop of Horrors. Her 2003 American Idol appearance ended in disqualification over earlier topless photographs. On May 16 that year, she made her Broadway debut in Rent as the “Seasons of Love” soloist. She remained with the cast for four years, building a theater career before her next television competition.
2011
Aguilera took her to The Voice’s Top 8
Davis auditioned for The Voice’s first season on April 26, 2011, singing Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” Christina Aguilera turned her chair and became her coach. Davis sang “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” in the battles, followed by “When Love Takes Over” on June 7. Aguilera chose her to advance. On June 21, Davis performed Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” with Aguilera seeking a gospel treatment. The staging included a raised white platform and dancers in choir robes. TVLine’s Michael Slezak praised her command of the performance once she reached the main stage. Her season result was a place in the Top 8.
Part 2
Making her show
2012
Dance music and a public coming-out followed in 2012
On September 4, 2012, Davis released the dance single “Love’s Got a Hold on Me.” She had questioned Aguilera’s choice of dance songs during The Voice, wondering how well they displayed her vocal ability. Her covers reached Nos. 3 and 5 on the iTunes dance chart, helping persuade her to pursue recording again. “They were on to something,” she told SheWired. That summer, Davis had publicly come out as bisexual after an interviewer in St. Louis asked about her sexuality while she promoted a Pride festival performance. She explained her decision: “I’m going to answer this question truthfully.”
2014
She completed her Howard degree in 2014
Davis had kept taking classes part time through her performing career. In a November 2013 interview, she explained that finishing her education had remained a life goal, and she wanted graduation to be a birthday present to herself. She thought about the children she hoped to have and the example she wanted to give them about higher education. In 2014, she graduated from Howard with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. When BroadwayWorld asked about her proudest achievement in January 2016, she named finishing her bachelor’s degree.
2016
Her cabaret joined pop songs to musical theater
By January 2016, Davis had developed a cabaret show that combined her interests in pop, hip-hop, rock and theater. She presented songs as musical theater pieces, with humor built into the show, including a Britney Spears tribute. She said an Apollo Theatre performance the previous summer had sold out. Her approach to choosing material included listening for the story inside a song: she described hearing a desire for love in Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen.” Theater remained central to her work because it demanded singing, acting and learning choreography. “There are no shortcuts on Broadway,” she told BroadwayWorld.
2017
Henri gave her a role in queer history
In 2017, Davis played Henri, the butch bartender in the off-Broadway musical The View UpStairs. The show drew on the 1973 arson attack at the UpStairs Lounge, a gay bar in New Orleans. Davis and other cast members studied police photographs while preparing for the production. That year, she received the José Esteban Muñoz award from the Center for LGBTQ Studies at the Graduate Center, CUNY. In a 2019 Washington Blade interview, she described the production and award as reinforcing her connection to the community. She spoke with pride about sharing stages with LGBTQ performers and helping open doors for others.
Part 3
Teaching and performing
2025
Baltimore brought jazz sets and a benefit booking in 2025
Davis performed at Artscape After Dark in Baltimore in May 2025. She sang for two nights at Bloom’s Bar inside Hotel Ulysses in Mount Vernon and headlined the Echoes of the City stage. Both nights at the bar filled to capacity. She had been booked for jazz and blues sets. Another Baltimore engagement linked her singing with support for local families. She was scheduled to give a dinner concert at Midlina on August 31 for St. Francis Neighborhood Center. The benefit was intended to support free community programs, including the Power Project afterschool program for children in West Baltimore. Its work included hot meals, tutoring, homework help, and activities in science, technology and the arts.
2026
Her 2026 performances reached Baltimore and Chicago
During Memorial Day weekend in 2026, Davis performed at Baltimore’s Artscape festival and its Artscape After Dark program. The nighttime program used Whistle & Cane Juke Joint and Ikonic Live. On October 3, she sang at E3 Radio’s Purple Tie Affair at Sidetrack in Chicago, a benefit that honored LGBTQ community contributor Otis Mack. The event included a silent auction and raffle, and a live appeal for contributions surpassed the evening’s fundraising goal. Davis told the audience she had recently had surgery and had been unsure she could perform. She completed her set, closing with Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
