Nicolle Galyon’s work spans co-writing Automatic and Tequila, developing artists at Songs & Daughters, and releasing her own album firstborn.

Nicolle Galyon’s songwriting work had begun before she appeared on The Voice in 2012: she signed with Warner Chappell in 2007. Her career ran through the songs other artists recorded, the artists she helped develop as president of Songs & Daughters—a female-focused label partnership with Big Loud—and her own debut album, firstborn, which arrived in July 2022.

Songwriter

2015–19

Shared songwriting credits brought Grammy nominations

Galyon earned Best Country Song nominations at the Grammys through shared writing credits. At the 2015 Grammys, she, Natalie Hemby and Miranda Lambert were the nominees for Best Country Song for Lambert’s Automatic. In the 2019 category, Galyon, Jordan Reynolds and Dan Smyers shared the credit for Dan + Shay’s Tequila.

Her songwriting spanned country recordings and a pop recording. Her songs included I Quit Drinking by Kelsea Ballerini and LANY, Minimum Wage by Blake Shelton, and Gone by Dierks Bentley. She also worked on Camila Cabello’s Consequences.

Songs & Daughters

2019–20

Songs & Daughters supported female creators and writers

Big Loud announced Songs & Daughters in July 2019 with the stated purpose of supporting female creators and their music. Madison Kozak was the first signed artist. Galyon said she wanted to provide the mentorship and female leadership she had wanted when she moved to Nashville.

Songs & Daughters added a publishing arm with Big Loud Publishing and Warner Chappell Music, with Tiera as its first songwriter. In a July 2020 interview, Galyon described the work of a publisher as close to day-to-day management. She said she had waited until she could give a writer enough time and attention.

Songs & Daughters also partnered with Hailey Whitters’ Pigasus Records on marketing and promotion for The Dream. Galyon said Whitters had already finished and funded the project. They had written together for years, and Galyon wanted to continue working with her after the writing session.

Her own album

2022

Galyon told her own story on firstborn and on stage

For firstborn, Galyon turned that attention toward her own life. In announcing the album, she said much of her creativity had gone into other people’s stories and future work, including songs, her label and the next generation of artists. She wanted to tell her own story in first person.

The songs also had a public life in her own voice. A Live at the Hall program from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, recorded in January 2022, brought together performance, audience questions and stories about songs she wrote, including All the Pretty Girls, Automatic and Tequila. In November 2022, she presented An Evening With Nicolle Galyon at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s CMA Theater, where she later shared the stage with co-writers, including Emily Weisband for Consequences and Hillary Lindsey for Boy Crazy.
