Catie Turner made American Idol’s Top 7, then made her debut album as an independent artist. Released on October 16, 2026, Blue Alchemy followed a major label deal, a break in her writing and a return to choosing her own songs. Her path to it began with the teenage songwriter fans met on television.
Part 1
American Idol
2018
She learned guitar at 15 and auditioned with her own song
Before American Idol, Turner stayed up late singing Adele and Miley Cyrus songs. She began playing guitar at 15 and found a way to express herself through it. At 17, she auditioned with her original “21st Century Machine”; the season aired in 2018. Her mother helped put that song into the audition, where Turner had also considered a Britney Spears cover. She recalled being so surprised by the judges’ decision to send her to Hollywood that she fell to her knees and cried. Her grandmother thought she was suffering from heatstroke.
2018
“Once Upon a Dream” took her into the Top 7
On Disney Night in 2018, Turner sang “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty. She was a Neshaminy High School senior, and the performance secured her place in the Top 7. Katy Perry, dressed as Snow White, told Turner that everything she did was “extremely magical” and praised her growth during the competition. The next round paired Prince material with songs from the contestants’ birth years. Turner performed “Oops!... I Did It Again” and “Manic Monday” on May 6. Her run reached the Top 7 of American Idol’s sixteenth season.

Part 2
Atlantic
2019–2020
Her Atlantic signing came with clarinet practice
Turner released her independent EP The Sad Vegan in 2019 and signed with Atlantic Records in 2020. The celebration happened at home during the pandemic, with her grandfather practicing clarinet and Turner asking her brothers and father to keep quiet. “It was over a Zoom call,” she told the Lower Bucks Times. She had spent eight weeks living in Los Angeles before her mother urged her to return to Bucks County. Her single “One Day” arrived that November. She had written it about taking a relationship one day at a time, and her team connected its message to life during lockdown.

Heartbroken and Milking It drew on her past
On July 16, 2021, Turner released the six-song Atlantic EP Heartbroken and Milking It. Back in her childhood bedroom during lockdown, she drew on earlier heartbreak for material. Its opening song, “Therapy,” addressed a partner’s unhealthy dependence and encouraged counseling. Turner liked that “it doesn’t take itself so seriously,” she told American Songwriter. “Funeral” dealt with the end of a friendship, extending the EP’s subject beyond romantic relationships. She also described gaining confidence from the response to “i luv him.”, which she had written on the day of her first heartbreak in 2019.
Part 3
Independent again
2023–2024
She became independent again in 2024
Atlantic released Comedy & Tragedy: Act I in June 2023 and Act II that October. Turner became independent again in 2024. Her piano-led “God Must Hate Me” had passed 72 million Spotify streams when she spoke to Pleaser. She said her writing had become tangled in thoughts about who would hear it and how they would react. “I stopped writing from feeling,” she said. Her summer 2024 song “Friends” marked a return to writing openly about her experiences. She was so direct that she contacted the person involved before its release. She described her aim as learning to write with the freedom she had at the start of her career.
2025
Her 2025 songs put disappointment into focus
Turner released “I Might” in the summer of 2025, followed by “Tourist Attraction.” The latter song explored disappointment through the image of a trip that produced a cheap souvenir. Its visualizer traveled through Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York City, with Helen Chatham Showalter directing and editing and Julian Daniel supplying VHS footage. The song ran just under three minutes. On October 10, Turner released the four-song EP Grow Out Of You. These releases formed part of the independent work that led toward her first full-length album.

“Hurt You Now” brought her songwriting to piano
By her February 26, 2026 interview with The Luna Collective, Turner had released “Hurt You Now.” A difficult friendship situation helped inspire the song, along with her experience of understanding a breakup after time had passed. She deliberately chose a piano ballad and drew on the mood of “Skinny Love” and the piano ballads she had grown up with. She described writing as a way to examine feelings and identify the cause of the knot in her stomach. Asked what she would tell her teenage self, she said, “ignore everybody and keep the go-go boots.”

She chose every song on Blue Alchemy
Blue Alchemy arrived on October 16, 2026, with 14 tracks. Turner had begun by writing individual singles and discovered that they belonged together as an album. In her interview with LoveIsPop, she explained the freedom she had gained: “I was able to pick every single song.” She described an earlier label process in which songs were assessed for their suitability and possible changes. For this project, liking a song was enough to include it. The album’s collaborators included Carobae, Drew Pearson, Jack Ritter, John Mark Nelson and Drew Polovick; Hallie Melton mastered the record.

“Deer on 95” helped her trust herself again
Writing “Deer on 95” gave Turner a test of her confidence. She wrote it on her bed before going to a coffee shop for a hard conversation. In her October 21, 2026 interview with The Luna Collective, she described it as one of the last songs written for the album, with a verse and chorus she had created herself. “Oh, I didn’t lose my songwriting ability,” she recalled realizing. She also built a visual partnership with Kaya Stewart. Their shared love of the online game Stardoll helped shape the video for “Who Am I,” while Turner proposed a zombie apocalypse for “California.”

Her album tour is scheduled to begin in November 2026
Turner is scheduled to perform in Toronto on November 15, 2026, with further dates including Philadelphia on November 22 and Los Angeles on December 5. Kiss Bang is scheduled to open the Blue Alchemy tour. In October, Turner described plans to play bass and spoke about preparing stage scenery with Kaya Stewart, who is part of Kiss Bang. The preparations included cardboard mailboxes and picket fences. She said concern about ticket sales had previously taken joy from performing. For this trip, she looked forward to traveling with friends and seeing fans again.
