Blake Lewis followed his American Idol runner-up finish with a sold-out Las Vegas debut alongside Phat Cat Swinger. This is the path from his dance records and jazz collaborations to a partnership with Marco Palos, singing pop hits arranged for a big band.
Part 1
Seattle and Idol
2002
Loop pedals made him a one-man band before Idol
Before American Idol, Lewis performed a show built around loop pedals. He could lay down a beat, sing over it, add harmonies and supply a bass line with his voice. He had sung with the a cappella group KickShaw, which he departed in 2002, and performed drum and bass, hip-hop, electronic and singer-songwriter sets as Bshorty. He began beatboxing at 17. Those performances brought him into contact with producer BT, whom he had opened for in Seattle before entering Idol.
2007
He rearranged Bon Jovi on the way to runner-up
On American Idol in 2007, Lewis sang Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife” in the Top 9. His Top 6 arrangement of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” put beatboxing at the center of the performance. On May 1, he changed the verse, returned to the familiar chorus melody and added an extended beatbox passage in the middle. Randy Jackson called it “The most original version of a song on American Idol ever!” Lewis performed the song again in the finale, alongside “She Will Be Loved” and “This Is My Now”, and finished runner-up.
Part 2
A recording career
2007–2014
Dance records led to his own label
Lewis released A.D.D. (Audio Day Dream) through Arista and 19 Recordings on December 4, 2007. It reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200. He parted with Arista in June 2008, and Tommy Boy released his second album, Heartbreak on Vinyl, on October 6, 2009. The title song reached No. 1 on both the Dance/Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts in 2010. His next album, Portrait of a Chameleon, arrived on May 20, 2014, through his own Audio Day Dream Records. It was his first independent album.
2016
Postmodern Jukebox brought him into vintage jazz
By October 2016, Lewis had spent a couple of years with Postmodern Jukebox. He described the collective’s music as jazz from the 1930s and 1940s, shaped by pianist Scott Bradlee. “The group really took off on youtube,” Blake Lewis told Equality365. He was preparing a separate show with Seattle musicians at the Historic Everett Theatre, combining funk, rock, soul, pop and beatbox. He traced his range of interests to a childhood with a mother who sang rock and bluegrass, followed by his own interest in classical music, jazz and hip-hop.

2018
A Christmas album paired him with Phat Cat Swinger
Lewis appeared on Phat Cat Swinger’s 2018 holiday album, From: All of Us To: All of You (The Phat Cat Swinger Christmas Album). He sang “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” The project gathered guest singers around material from the band’s live Festival of Holidays performances at Disney California Adventure. Marco Palos sang “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” while Lucy Woodward took “Frosty the Snowman” and Louis Prima Jr. sang “Pure Imagination.” Lewis’s contribution placed him among the guest voices on a band project built around its seasonal stage show.
2021
He formed an electronic duo with KJ Sawka in 2021
Lewis continued making electronic music through The Private Language, his duo with drummer and producer KJ Sawka. They joined forces after a chance meeting in Seattle. Their early work included a cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and a remix of BT’s “The War.” By July 28, 2021, they had released their second track, “Cali Girls.” Lewis drew its lyrics from a memory of meeting a woman in Berlin and wrote with Sawka and Jacob Luttrell. Sawka developed the production, adding bass lines and guitar riffs.

Phat Cat Swinger
2026
His band’s South Point debut sold out in 2026
Phat Cat Swinger’s South Point debut ran from January 30 to February 1, 2026, and sold out all three nights. Lewis shared the front of the Las Vegas show with Palos. The set combined older Vegas material with songs by Michael Jackson, Soft Cell, Prince, George Michael and Bruno Mars. “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Tainted Love” were among the selections, and the band performed without backing tracks. “Pacemakers, look out,” Blake Lewis told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The band had also opened for Jay Leno at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

2026
The swing show carried into the 2026 theatre calendar
The band’s Vegas Mixtape 2026 program included “Help!”, “Careless Whisper” and “Mack the Knife,” a song Lewis had sung during Idol. He and Phat Cat Swinger were scheduled for the Columbia Theatre in Longview, Washington, on October 23, 2026. The program covered pop music from the 1960s onward, with songs associated with the Beatles, Hall & Oates and Michael Jackson. For the holiday season, Lewis is scheduled to appear with Phat Cat Swinger in A Not So Silent Night at the Fox Tucson Theatre in Tucson, Arizona, on December 1, 2026.
