The Idol years

2009

A Disney performance opened his route to Idol

Kelly had been singing professionally since age nine and had reached the finals of America’s Most Talented Kid at 11. In February 2009, he entered The American Idol Experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, four days after the attraction opened. He passed its auditions and won the most votes in a preliminary show. His performance of Lonestar’s “Amazed” then won the attraction’s grand finale. The prize was a Dream Ticket that put him at the front of the line for a regional American Idol audition. He used it in Orlando, turning a performance for park visitors into a route to television.

2010

His Idol run reached Frank Sinatra week in 2010

On American Idol season nine in 2010, Kelly sang Rascal Flatts’ “Here Comes Goodbye” in the Top 24 and the Rolling Stones’ “Angie” in the Top 12. His run included Shania Twain’s “You’ve Got a Way” in the Top 6. For the Top 5, he opened Frank Sinatra week with “Fly Me to the Moon,” under mentor Harry Connick Jr., who said, “he has such a sweet voice.” The judges wanted him to command more of the stage. Kelly finished fifth. He spoke about the work of learning songs during the summer tour, when he could choose a set built around music he knew.

2010

The 2010 tour let him sing the full story

Kelly began American Idols Live! Tour 2010 on July 1. His set included “Somebody Like You,” “Walking in Memphis” and “Fast Cars and Freedom.” At the Sacramento stop, he told Blogcritics interviewer Kirsten Coachman that he had chosen familiar songs that would get the audience moving. He explained that Idol had given him about three days to choose, shorten and learn a song. On tour, he could work through its complete story. “You have to know the story,” Kelly said. He also spoke about the fans’ reactions and the memories he would keep of the other singers making up guitar jams on the bus.

Nashville

2012

Buddy Lee Attractions signed him in 2012

During that August 2010 interview, Kelly said he planned to move to Nashville after the tour. He said he was working with Nathan Chapman and Stephanie Chapman and had been writing songs. By September 25, 2012, Buddy Lee Attractions had signed him to its performer and entertainment roster. Kelly was preparing a cross-country tour and recording his first album with producer Mark Moffat. The planned release was spring 2013. BLA vice president David Kiswiney said the agency intended to put Kelly in front of audiences through television and live performances.

2013

He released two country singles independently by 2013

By June 2013, Kelly had moved to Nashville and was seeking a label deal. He had released “Coincidence” in 2012 and followed it with “The Best Thing.” Both singles were independent releases. At 20, he was also preparing another set of Pennsylvania appearances, returning to the region where he had grown up in Sonestown. He was scheduled for the Fireman’s Carnival in Middleberg on August 10, the Montour-Delong Fair in Danville on August 14 and the McKean County Fair on August 16. His work at that point combined new country songs with bookings on the fair circuit.

2023

New singles and a racetrack booking followed in 2021–23

Kelly released the country single “Last Thing I Would Say” on November 30, 2021. A live booking followed: he was scheduled to perform at Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on March 25, 2023. The planned set ran from 8 to 10 p.m., with horse racing starting earlier that evening. Tickets cost $25. The venue promoted the appearance to Idol fans as an evening combining music and racing. On June 6, 2023, Kelly released another country single, “Can’t Make a Meant to Be.” Both releases carried a copyright credit in his own name.

Part 3

The Suncoast

2025

He sang across the Suncoast in 2025

In October 2025, Kelly had bookings in Southwest Florida. He was scheduled for Yucatan Waterfront in Matlacha on October 12 and for Venice Nights Market & Music at Maxine Barritt Park in Venice on October 25. The latter event was scheduled to pair vendors and food with live music; Kelly’s scheduled opening set began at 5 p.m. On November 19, he appeared on WWSB’s Suncoast View. The Sarasota station’s report the next day described him as a singer working across several Suncoast venues. His television return caught up with a career that had become part of the area’s local music schedule.

2026

He performed at Gulfcoast Pride in October 2026

In October 2026, Kelly performed at the Gulfcoast Pride Festival in Sarasota. The event, hosted by Project Pride SRQ around Overtown Square Park, included main and community stages, a vendor market and a family zone. Its theme was “Carry Pride Forward.” Kelly is scheduled to return to BellaVino Wine Bar in downtown Venice on November 27, 2026, for the venue’s Denim & Pearls event. The three-hour evening performance is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with tickets priced at $10 per person.
